Delayed rink opening miffs park users

If New York City can have outdoor skating ice rinks open in October, says Jutta Mason, she’s not buying arguments Toronto’s argument that it’s not cold enough yet to open 14 outdoor rinks as scheduled on Nov. 20.

The Dufferin Grove Park activist has locked horns with city staff before over delayed openings at free outdoor skating rinks and says they “haven’t proved their case.” This year, 14 of the city’s 51 outdoor rinks are to open Nov. 27, the rest on Dec. 4.

Last year, she and other volunteers flooded the Dufferin Grove Park’s rink (at Dufferin and Bloor) at night on their own — “That’s the easiest time to make ice, when there’s no sun at all” — and had the rink open Nov. 21, a week earlier than the city planned.
