Porter: City puts plans for youth skating party on ice

Skates. Rink. Hot chocolate. Marshmallows over a wood fire. Throw in a Hudson’s Bay blanket and a copy of Susanna Moodie’s Roughing It in the Bush, and you can call yourself Canadian.

That’s what the immigrant kids at Jane and Finch had in mind when they asked the city to let them host a community skating party at a nearby rink this Friday. They’re teenagers from Somalia, Cambodia and Afghanistan learning English, navigating their new city on the TTC and figuring out the mechanics of yanking the laces so firmly around the ankles of their rental skates that their fingers go numb.
