Conflicting Information

Re: 2009-2010 season

There is confusion about the scheduling of the outdoor rink hours for tomorrow, New Year's Day. On the city's web site it says that there will be no staff (i.e. no ice maintenance) and all buildings are closed (rinks unlocked), except for three of the four Civic Square rinks. http://www.toronto.ca/parks/recreation_facilities/skating/skating.htm

But in Etobicoke and North York, signs are posted at all rinks and/or schedules have been changed to reflect the different information in the e-mail excerpt below (in blue), from Parks Director Andy Koropeski. That e-mail says that on January 1 rinks are staffed and buildings are open. The e-mail was sent to CityRinks by Andy on December 18. He writes that he sent the same information to 311.

On December 19, and again on December 26 and December 30, the 311 operators gave us the same information as was in Parks director's e-mail. However, when we called to check one more time on December 31, the 311 staff said they could not find the Park's director's information and therefore they were giving out the "buildings closed, no maintenance" information that is on the city's website.

The 311 supervisor asked us to forward Andy's e-mail, which we did. They then said that they would change to the "rinks maintained, buildings open" information, since the e-mail was from the Parks director.

Several Toronto/EY 416 staff have told us that they ARE scheduled to work. However it seems that most recreation staff in Toronto/EY are NOT scheduled to work, so most buildings will not be open.

This does suggest that Parks and Recreation are not in the kind of close communication one hopes for.
