Rink information record February 2018

Feb.1, 2018

9 am Temp +1, all rinks listed as open except Queensway (closed for the season) and Glen Long ice conditions. Red flag for Grenadier Pond.

1 pm +2, sun and cloud. Glen Long is now also marked open.

10 pm Summerlea has a service alert that says "leisure skating only. No shinny hockey. Increased ice maintenance."

Feb.2, 2018

9 am temp -16. All except Queensway listed as open. Red flag for Grenadier.

Feb.3, 2018

8 am, temp -11, cloudy. Queensway closed for the season. All others listed as open. Red flag for Grenadier.

Feb.4, 2018

3 pm temp. +1, light snow. Queensway closed for the season. All others listed as open except for North Toronto: snow clearing crews headed to ice rink. Yellow flag for Grenadier.

Feb.5, 2018

9 am temp -12. Gen Long marked as closed for ice conditions. Queensway closed for the season. All others listed as open except for North Toronto: still listed as service alert, snow clearing crews headed to ice rink. Yellow flag for Grenadier.

8 pm, temp -8. North Toronto still listed as service alert, snow clearing crews headed to ice rink. The crew must have got lost.

Feb.6, 2018

9 am Temp. -9. Queensway closed for the season. All others listed as open except for North Toronto: still listed as service alert, snow clearing crews headed to ice rink. Yellow flag for Grenadier.

4 pm temp -6. North Toronto listed as open again.

Feb.7, 2018

9.45 am Temp. -8, snowing. All the rinks have service alerts for snow removal EXCEPT the rinks in North Toronto district -- they are all listed as open except for Broadlands Rink. In other words, their supervisor has not yet used his app to update the rink conditions. 11.30 am As it continues to snow, Glen Long has now been listed as closed but all the other North Toronto rinks that were listed as open at 9.30 are still listed that way. That includes North Toronto Memorial rink, which was listed as "snow clearance crews headed over" for three days before this (when it was not snowing).

12.30 snow continuing. Still no use of the service alert app for the North Toronto rinks marked as open.

2.30 temp -6, snow has stopped, sun and cloud. Some former service alerts rinks are starting to be marked as open. That includes all the North Toronto rinks from before -- still unlikely to be true. Rinks actually open now are Campbell, Dufferin, Giovanni Caboto, Greenwood, Jimmie Simpson, Kew, and Nathan Phillips.

9 pm -- all the rinks except Queensway are listed as open again, and the yellow flag is up for Grenadier Pond.

Feb.8, 2018

8 am temp -10, snowflurry. All rinks listed as open, except for Queensway, and the yellow flag is up on Grenadier.

Feb.9, 2018

8 am temp -9, cloudy. All rinks listed as open, except for Queensway, and the yellow flag is up on Grenadier.

4 pm temp -6, snowing. It has been snowing since about noon, and there is buildup on all the rinks. The central Toronto rinks all say service alert, snow removal in progress. One of those rinks is Christie, and there snow removal is certainly not in progress -- at least not during the two hours when there were 4 school classes at the rink, skating in the snow. Probably many of the others re the same.

The Etobicoke, Scarborough and North Toronto rinks all kept their open listing, although all will have a considerable amount of snow on them by now.

5 pm snowing. The two Scarborough rinks have now switched to a service alert, but North Toronto and Etobicoke still list all their rinks as open.

9 pm snow has stopped. Broadlands, Glen Long and Irving Chapley are all marked as closed. All the others are the same as before - no updates.

Feb.10, 2018

8 a.m. temp -6, light snow. Report almost identical to last night except Kew is marked as open.

10.30 am Most central Toronto rinks still have a service alert: Harry Gairey, Cedarvale, Christie, Dufferin, Greenwood, Hodgson, Monarch, Ramsden, Regent, Rosedale, Sherbourne Common, Trinity and Wallace.

A phone call to Dufferin to check said that the rink was cleaned at 9 am. Perhaps the information is wrong elsewhere too. Only Withrow, Kew, Ryerson, Campbell, Dieppe and Nathan Phillips are marked as open.

None of the other rinks were ever marked as service alert, except for Scarborough Civic, which is still marked that way now. Summary: none of these reports are reliable. Yellow flag is up for Grenadier Pond.

11.30 am light snow. Most of the rinks have reverted to their non-information -- one handy click by a supervisor says that 100% of central Toronto rinks are having snow clearance (not true) and two more handy clicks say that 100% of Etobicoke and North Toronto are open (not true if the implication is none are being serviced). Scarborough is 1:1 -- McCowan is listed as open, Scarborough Civic as being serviced. Is it true or false? Only the Scarborough supervisor knows for sure.

1 pm continuing snow. Etobicoke has now added 100% service alerts. Scarborough and North York have changed nothing from before.

10 pm most rinks are listed as open except for Glen Long, Irving Chapley, North Toronto, and Sherbourne Common, all listed as closed; and Nathan Phillips, Riverdale, Ryerson, and Scarborough Civic, all listed as service alert.

Feb.11, 2018

7 am temp -5 overcast, freezing rain warning. Posting the same as 10 pm yesterday.

8 pm temp -2, freezing rain stopped in later afternoon. All rinks listed as open except Queensway. Yellow flag on Grenadier.

Feb.12, 2018

8 am temp -9, clear. All rinks listed as open except Queensway. Yellow flag on Grenadier.

Feb.13, 2018

10.30 am temp -8, cloudy. All rinks listed as open except Queensway. Red flag on Grenadier.

4 pm temp +5. sunny. Rinks listed as closed: Buttonwood, Broadlands, High Park, Hodgson, Humber Valley, Irving Chapley, Riverdale, Sir Adam beck, Westway. Note that a rink user says Westgrove is unskateable but it's still listed as open.

Otter Creek and Rennie listed as service alert, hockey side closed. Queensway closed for the season. Red flag for Grenadier.

5.30 pm temp +5, additional closures: Glen Long, Joseph Bannon, Summerlea, Martingrove, Westgrove. Lots of people skating in Mississauga (webcam)

Still lots of people skating in Mississauga (webcam), even more at the Bentway.

8 am temp +5, misty. Listed as closed, in addition to Queensway: Broadlands, Glen Long,High Park, Irving Chapley, Riverdale, Westgrove.

10.30 am temp +6. Westgrove again marked as open, all the others still closed.

9 pm temp +6 Marked as closed: Broadlands, Irving Chapley, Ledbury, Summerlea, Westgrove. Service alert for both Scarborough rinks, McCowan and Scarborough Civic: "Due to temperatures the ice is soft with bare patches and water covered." Red flag for Grenadier. Maybe 30 skaters in Mississauga, some moving fast and smooth.

Feb.16, 2018

10 am temp 0, cloudy. All rinks listed as open except for the two in Scarborough, which still have yesterday's message on (service alert for soft ice), and Westgrove.

5 pm temp -3, sunny. Rinks listed as closed in addition to Queensway: Broadlands and Westgrove. High Park has a service alert: hockey side closed.

9 pm temp -7. Rinks listed as closed in addition to Queensway: Broadlands, Westgrove (both for the non-descriptive "ice conditions") Summerlea ("power disruption").

Feb.17, 2018

11 am temp -1 cloudy. Rinks listed as closed in addition to Queensway: Broadlands, Westgrove (both for the non-descriptive "ice conditions") Summerlea is no longer listed as closed for a power disruption. Red flag continues for Grenadier Pond.

8 pm temp -2. Only Queensway listed as closed.

Feb.18, 2018

8.30 am 0, sun and cloud. Only Queensway listed as closed.

4 pm temp 4, sunny.Rinks listed as closed in addition to Queensway: Summerlea and Westgrove (ice conditions). Red flag for Grenadier Pond.

9 pm temp 0. Rinks listed as closed in addition to Queensway: Broadlands, Summerlea and Westgrove.

Feb.19, 2018

Feb.20, 2018

9.30 am temp +8, light rain. Most rinks are still listed as open except Broadlands, Irving Chapley, Ledbury, Queensway (closed for the season) Mel Lastman, and Westgrove.

2 pm temp +15, cloudy. Most rink listed as service alert water-covered except the two Scarborough rinks and most of the North Toronto rinks (North Toronto Memorial, Otter Creek, Pleasantview), which are listed as open. That's not likely.

9 pm temp+14. Exactly the same message as at 2, still giving wrong "open" info for the same three rinks.

Feb.21, 2018

'10.30 am temp +2. Still exactly the same message as yesterday, still saying "open" info for the same three rinks.

11.30 am same as above

4 pm temp. +4, cloudy. All Etobicoke-region rinks are marked as open except for Giovanni Caboto (service alert). All North Toronto region rinks are marked as closed except for North Toronto Memorial and Otter Creek (service alert) and Pleasantview (open). All central Toronto rinks are marked as service alert, water removal in progress. For Scarborough, McCowan is listed as open, and Scarborough Civic is listed as service alert. Unlikely to be accurate.

9 pm temp -1, clear. Most rinks now marked as open except most of the North Toronto rinks are still marked as closed, the same ones as the rest of the day. Scarborough Civic is listed as closed.

Feb.22, 2018

9 am, temp -2, cloudy. Most city rinks are listed as open except for Joseph Bannon (closed for ice conditions), Mel Lastman, closed without a reason given, Scarborough Civic (closed for maintenance) and of course Queensway. Red flag for Grenadier.

'1.30pm temp +1, cloudy. All listed open except Joseph Bannon (ice conditions'') and Queensway.

4 pm a lot of rinks were empty, or almost. All listed as open except Queensway.

9.30 pm only 10 skaters showing on the Mississauga webcam.

Feb.23, 2018

7.30 am temp 0, cloudy. All rinks marked as open except Queensway. 8.30 pm misty. All rinks marked as open except Broadlands, Glen Long and Irving Chapley.

8 am, temp +2, cloudy. All rinks marked as open except Queensway and Glen Long.

Feb.25, 2018

10.30 am, sun and cloud, temp +7. Most city rinks marked as open except the two Scarborough rinks, both marked as service alert covered with water.

4 pm temp +10, sunny. All rinks listed as closed except service alerts for Greenwood and Rennie (leisure skating trails open) and Scarborough Civic from before; and Christie, Lambton Kingsway, and Pleasantview listed as open, presumably because someone forgot to put them on the closed list.

Lots of skaters at Mississauga's rink, which is mostly in shade by now.

Feb.26, 2018

5 pm sunny all day, temp +6. 11 rinks have closed for the season as scheduled: Buttonwood, Campbell, Humber Valley, Jimmie Simpson, Joseph Bannon, Lambton, Prince of Wales, Rivercrest, Ryerson, Summerlea, Westgrove. Queensway was already closed all season.

Most of the other rinks are listed as closed, except for Ledbury, Nathan Phillips, Otter Creek, Ramsden, Scarborough Civic, Pleasantview and Wallace-Emerson.

Service alert for Greenwood (hockey side only is open) and Rennie (pleasure-skating side only is open).

10.30 pm temp +2. Most of the central Toronto rinks are marked as open except Cedarvale, Christie, Rosedale, Sherbourne, and Trinity. All of the North Toronto rinks are marked as closed except Pleasantview. Most Etobicoke rinks are marked closed except for Sunnydale, Giovanni Caboto, and Rennie. In Scarborough, the civic rink is marked open and McCowan is marked closed.

Feb.27, 2018

12 noon, temp. +12 and sunny. All central Toronto rinks are marked as open except Sherbourne Common, Trinity, and Withrow. All North Toronto Rinks are marked as closed except N.T.Memorial and Otter Creek. All Etobicoke rinks are marked as closed except Rennie, Giovanni Caboto and Colonel Sam Smith. Both Scarborough rinks are marked as open.

2 pm, temp +13, sunny. All rinks marked as closed (Bentway too) except City Hall.

7 pm temp +9. Most city rinks closed except Nathan Phillips, and the hockey pads at West Mall and Greenwood. Mississauga looks good but still only has about 25 skaters including 2 rink guards.

Feb.28, 2018

8.30 am, temp +6, cloudy. Most extended-season rinks are listed as open, except Glen Long, Mel Lastman, Sherbourne Common, Valleyfield, and Pleasantview.

10 a.m. All but five of the extended-season rinks are listed as open.

At 1.30 pm, sunny and +16, fourteen of the extended-season rinks are still listed as open, more than half of them in the central Toronto administrative region.

3 pm, +16: all but 4 rinks marked as closed

4 pm +16, sun and cloud. Nathan Phillips and Scarborough Civic marked as open -- makes sense, since both have shade. Irving Chapley marked as open, even though it was often marked as closed in much cooler weather. Greenwood marked as open on the hockey side. No skaters on the Mississauga Rink. Bentway closed for the season.

7 pm +6. Nathan Phillips marked as open. West Mall and Greenwood service alert: hockey only. Scarborough Civic -- pylons on part of the rink.

9 pm temp +2. The following are listed as open: Harry Garey, Christie, Col.Sam Smith, Dufferin, Caboto, Greenwood, Hodgson, Nathan Phillips, Ramsden, Rennie, Sunnydale, Trinity, Wallace, West Mall. Scarborough Civic still listed as service alert pylons up. Six skaters at Mississauga.
