TORONTO STAR, JANUARY 3 1958: "It is true that the parks department operates 58 natural ice rinks for skating and 23 for hockey - or will do so, if and when there is enough frost. For all the freezing weather we get here most winters, the department might as well spare the trouble and expense, and get on with the job of multiplying the number of artificial ice rinks."

(And they did!)

Christie Pits

C+

779 Crawford St., N of Bloor, E of Ossington

416-392-7687

Strengths: Prime location. Change room cased in glass pane, floors are all matted and there is a woodstove. New drop-in beginner shinny and Sunday family skate with music, campfire, food, skate rental all well attended and enjoyed.

Areas for improvement: Appropriate staffing needed to restore balance to the rink house so that the youth are not taking up all the space and making families feel unwelcome. The snack bar is not used. Ice maintenance is unreliable. Day time usage is scarce.

Next steps: Open up the snack bar and staff it. Offer skating equipment (expand on the few skates that are there). Offer more programming and call surrounding schools. Improve ice maintenance
