There's nothing like outdoor skating

This has not been a good year for natural ice rinks so far. The weather has been too warm and rainy most days. The liner was up earlier in the month but has been removed now, and the rink is just muddy winter grass.
It's not easy to get volunteers to put in all those hours of work for so little skating time. But maybe February will be better.
Rink diaries from earlier years:
Like most natural ice rinks this year, this one appears to have been taken down by warm weather after about a week of good ice. Tonight it's mainly water in the liner. Fingers crossed that there's enough sustained cold weather soon to make two more weeks possible this season.
Apparently it looks great and people have tried skating on it but it's still too thin.
Last night one of the ice makers wrote "We're still working on it - the up and down weather is making it difficult." But they must have done good work afterwards -- this morning the rink looked very good, despite the warning sign and the danger tape -- maybe ready to open tomorrow? Certainly by the weekend.
At 9.45 pm, six young guys were playing shinny in the semi-darkness -- the only illumination was from the streetlights on Keele. Two other men and a dog were sitting watching them. A friendly scene, and the ice looked great. One of the players said he had flooded the rink an hour ago, and found that yesterday's rain and warmer temperatures had actually improved the ice.
From an ice maker: "Ice at Baird in great condition."
Quick update: Love the rink, skate there all the time. Whoever is nice enough to maintain it does an excellent job. A lot of the neighbourhood kids and families use it too.
That being said, went skating last night, and the rink had a lot of dangerous ridges and potholes. It probably needs to be hosed down thoroughly by whoever is nice enough to maintain it. Also, the net is pretty badly damaged, and a new one (or two) would be amazing for the community.
Also, some of those darn teens (I suspect) have been drinking near the bench area and breaking bottles. Could be a hazard for the kids.
One man was seen flooding the rink with two hoses.
